The Civil War produced a racial settlement that was both radical and unfinished. It formally ended American chattel slavery, but left the fight for more—for securing the rights of African Americans in the free nation—tragically incomplete. This talk discusses the transatlantic immediate abolitionist movement and its critical role in shaping this outcome. In exploring the wartime actions of abolitionists both famous and obscure, from Frederick Douglass to former slaveholder Moncure Conway, it illuminates how their divisions over the Union war effort helped shape a conflict that achieved both so much and so little in terms of Black rights.
