Position Focus:
Reporting to the Associate Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at the MacMillan Center, the Education and Outreach Manager will lead efforts to develop programming and outreach in African American history and the history of slavery and its legacies in New Haven, Connecticut, and beyond. The Education and Outreach Manager will develop and grow existing GLC efforts to connect teachers at local and regional K-12 institutions, museums, and public history organizations with the expertise and resources on African American history and the history of slavery available at Yale. This includes the human resources of its staff and faculty and the collections and experiences available through the university’s museums, libraries, archives, galleries, and GLC programming.

Coordinate with GLC staff to plan programs and integrate existing outreach initiatives on the history of slavery and its legacies across Yale into a permanent educational outreach program for K-12 school students and for public history practitioners working in museums and other cultural institutions. Liaise with other programs, departments, schools, and organizations at the MacMillan Center and throughout Yale working on GLC-focused priorities to foster communication and potential collaborations. Coordinate events and programming with relevant departments and organizations at MacMillan and Yale as well as interested students, staff, and faculty.

Develop programming and manage logistics for a week-long GLC summer Public History Institute on the challenges of grappling with difficult histories in public cultural institutions. Cultivate relationships with community-based stakeholders as core partners in the practice and teaching of public history programming. Plan and lead professional development activities for teachers, including primary source workshops and field trips. Maintain and extend the curricular development activities of the GLC’s Black and Latino History Project.

Maintain the Center’s weekly e-newsletter, listing upcoming events, announcements from relevant organizations, and news items of interest. Develop and maintain links with local media and community organizations, representing the GLC within the local community. Identify opportunities for grant applications and fundraising and assist with data collection and impact measurement for successful grants. Pursue grant-funded opportunities and networking activities with statewide humanities and educational organizations such as CT Humanities and the CT Council for the Social Studies. Foster collaborations with and support the work of allied organizations in New Haven, statewide, and nationally. Coordinate with the Yale & Slavery Research Project to assist with outreach, dissemination, and community feedback on the outcomes and responses to the project.

Required Education and Experience
1. Master’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 2 years related experience or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of 4 years related experience; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Writing and reporting skills in an academic research environment with strong understanding of the relevant subject matter.
3. Experience with grants including narrative grant writing and data gathering for applications.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience in public education, developing curricular materials, administering outreach and/or community programs.
Knowledge of/ experience with Black Atlantic/African American history and culture.
Experience with media/public relations.
Ability to engage communities on social media.
Experience partnering with foundations/corporations on grant opportunities.
Experience in curatorial or public history work.
Experience teaching K-12 or college level.
