Emilie

Transcription: To the hon. The President & Members of the Police Jury of the Parish of New Orleans,

The Petition of Emilie, a f.w. Of c. of the City of New Orleans, humbly sheweth,

That your Petitioner Together with her mother Louison was formerly a slave & belonged to the late widow Morphy, that some time before the death of her said mistress, by means of her savings & the assistance from friends your Petitioner succeeded in purchasing her freedom and was regularly emancipated;

That from the Time of your Petitioner’s emancipation, she conceived of the idea of working for the freedom of her mother Louison, that by means of your Petitioner’s economy, industry & hard labor she has succeeded in raising a sum which, although trifling when compared to the real value of the slave Louison, has been accepted by A. Morphy her present owner, on condition that the slave should be forthwith emancipated by your Petitioner;

That the said Louison has long & faithfully served the family of her said Master A. Morphy is no doubt in consideration of said service & as a reward thereof that he has accepted the very low price given by your Petitioner,

Wherefore, the business being considered, that it may please you honorable body to consent to the emancipation of the said Louison, your petitioner’s mother now aged about forty five years & to authorize your petitioner to fulfill the necessary formality to obtain said emancipation and that she be authorized to remain in this state.

A. Morphy, for petitioner.

The undersigned being duly sworn declare that they have known the slave Louison a number of years, that she has always been an honest, sober & faithful servant & has enjoyed to an unlimited extent the confidence of the family of the late widow Mrphy to whom she belonged from her infancy; that she is able to maintain herself, being a first raite seamstress, washer & ironer & from her honesty & good conduct is capable of making a good use of her freedom.
